In this still  picture, John Anderton is the main focus. The really strange thing about this picture is that usually red is supposed to draw the eye, but for some reason, the black color wearing Anderton ends up popping out more than the red does. It just seems out of place, which is the reason for the effect. Although his face doesn't follow the rule of thirds, it is the easiest thing to say, especially because it is the thing that is most in focus. The only other detail that is worth noting is that he is inside the car, but his facial expression denotes weakness. It is not an aggressive or angry face, but he just looks defeated, as in this scene, it is where he is detained in that car and being brought back to headquarters to be arrested.
Although we can kind of see his whole body,  I think it is more of a medium shot since the only thing in the car that is well lit and is able to be well seen is the upper  half of his body. I think that only the upper portion was well lit in order to really show and accentuate his facial expression, to show how serious and how sad of a situation he's in. He's also wearing a black shirt, in which black usually denotes a very depressing tone.
Every aspect of this scene just makes Anderton seem so helpless.

  1. Can you post the image again, Jed? It's not showing up. Once you get it loaded let me know.

  2. I would have to agree that Anderton is the main focus on this but it is so interesting that he is put in the "lazy frame" so to speak if he is the focus when it is generally avoided.
I disagree that he seems helpless though, he appears to be surprised because of his forehead, it is like his eyebrows are raised up in shock. Also the look that he is giving may be just a look of new found power or security, I think this is from the scene where he barely escapes the police in the newly made car.

  3. Any thoughts in his posture in this image, Jed? What sense does the "reader" get with the way Anderton is sitting in the car here?
